He was the son of Edwin CHRISTMAS and Margaret Abigail, née RUSSELL.  His father, Edwin, was ex-navy - a captain's steward on at least one posting - and the proprietor of the hotel.  His mother, Margaret, was the daughter of the proprietor of the ‘pleasure ground’ in Portchester Castle.
